You all may gather whatever information you deem necesary and make up all your own minds, I won't try to tell anyone what the right side of this issue is because I'm not even sure myself. I have chosen to support the raising of the dB level AND funding of it’s enforcement. Right now, all the good Oregon Dunes riding areas are limited to 93 dB. This is too low and I support raising it to something more attainable for more people, which will result in higher compliance by the public and manufacturers. When a ticket for being over legal sound level costs people $300, they’re going to think damn hard about whether or not that exhaust system is worth it. And when they “vote with their dollars” and only buy exhausts that comply, my prediction is that manufacturers will have quieter systems on the shelf immediately. If 700HP sandrails can make sound check, so can a 60HP quad, period. The drag bikes won’t be effected, as they aren’t now, because closed course racing has been, and will continue to be, exempt from sound level restrictions. And for the weekend grudge racers, the market has already produce banshee silencers that do not negatively impact flow while quieting them to within legal limits. Another aspect of this issue is that the 93 dB level isn’t enforced in the Oregon Dunes, which is good and bad. It’s good because the rangers clearly believe this to be too difficult or unreasonable to attain and generally ticket only in the very 90’s or over…if you even see them. It’s bad because there is a large group of “Joe public” out there who is lobbying to get the legal limit down even lower than 93. They don’t know that it’s not being enforced now and just assume that if they can still hear all the noise at 93, it must need to go lower. If 93 dB were actually enforced, nobody in town would hear sh!t. But if a statewide standard could be set for the sound limit, it would be easier for people to comply EVERYWHERE they ride and easier for manufacturers to know what to produce. |

what does all this do though?
i guess thats my question. are they afraid that we will wake up the sleeping mountain lions and bears that live near the dunes? i just dont understand the whole point to the sound restrictions. maybe im missing something? i just dont see the downside to a noisy atv. who cares and why? is it some sort of safety issue? im not trying to be a jerk, i really am interested in the details so i can understand it.

And right now these people see that the limit is 93dB...and they can still hear bikes loud and clear because of the a$$holes on the 100 dB + bikes. So, naturally, they say "93 isn't quiet enough, damn it, i can still hear em out there!". If it were regulated and enforced, at something like say 96 dB, the townspeople would stop lobbying to shut down the whole operation. Incidentally, it's important to note that a surprisingly high number of the aforementioned townsfolk are going significantly out of their way to get the Oregon Dunes shut down to OHV use. Many have forgotten who brings all the money into these otherwise dead towns. They don't realize that the one loaf of bread they buy each week doesn't exactly keep the Safeway open by itself. It's us who bring the money and unfortunately many are too stupid or stubborn to realize it now so they won't know what they had until it's gone. |

we have that same issue in pismo. i lived in oceano for
many years which is literally 2 minutes from the dunes. the sound was really faint and from my experiences the people living near the dunes make it into a bigger issue than it really is. people were riding the dunes long before i lived in the area. i accepted the fact that there would be noise when i moved next to the dunes. thats just reality. the honest truth is that they will never find an allowable sound restriction. in my opinion they really just want atv riders to just go away. the sound reg is just one more way to attempt to eliminate atv riding. and in the big picture is one more way to try to eliminate people from riding the dunes all together .maybe not in the short run but in the long run. its like when people buy a house near disneyland then complain about the noise on fridays when they do their big shows. just kind of a no brainer to me haha. residents in pismo are loosing the sound battle so now they are saying that the atvs in the dunes make sand clouds that make the locals sick because its disturbing the air quality. if its not one thing its another... just me venting

Exactly, and right now the name of the game up here is noise.
Option 1: Cooperate in such a way that we come to an agreement with the locals about what is realistically acceptable and ride the Oregon Dunes a little longer (ie: all the trails at the perimeter of all the dunes - since that's what's really on the table right now) Option 2: Fight back in a losing battle and allow the locals to increase the "noise buffer", which is code for making the riding areas smaller by moving all the boundries in closer to each other (ie: closing all the trails at the perimeter of all the dunes - since that's what's really on the table right now) I choose to play ball with option 1. It's not ideal but things rarely are. It's the best of the available options. |

its all just the same assclowns(sorry for the curse im just mad). they dont think before they move next to the dunes then complain. its the same people that move out into the country then lobby to have all the dangerous wildlife killed. its just a bunch of stupid hippies, conservastionists, and just plain ignorant people. i would love to live next to the dunes and hear the wonderful sounds of high reving and loud bikes all day everyday. but im an exhaust guy and i always will be. to me its better then music.
on real note though, what does the blue section on the picture meen, is that like its over but acceptable? mr senator. thats where my lrd is at. and i thought it was real quiet!!! |
