Default Suzuki LT 250 - A 86 for the chick??

So, I think I found a really clean, all stock LT 250R for the chicks around camp to ride. Having never owned one of these, I have a few questions.

Do these make OK dune rides? I don't need it to beat any thing, just keep up some what with 450's. What paddles are recommend for these? How about gearing?

From what I can find, hop up parts are few and far between for these, that's good for me as I can't leave anything alone. What upgrades are the best bang for the buck? I'm thinking carb, K&N fiter W/outerwear and a FMF pipe set up, and that's about it.

Coolheads for these, are they worth it?

i know that you dont care about winning races, but the 86 potentiel is not there because it being case inducted versus reed inducted. therefore, a 450 will easily over power it! i think you would be better off waiting for an 87 on up lt. im sure you found a great deal so i will have to say that it is a comfortable ride. however, in this economy, i would keep searching.

LOL, it just has to sort of keep up with the 450's. I'm thinking this thing should go as well or better the a 350 warrior of a 400EX, with a bit more cool factor. This thing is for the chicks, so it doesn't need to be a speed demon by any stretch.

I have been looking at the 87 up swap......oh man I can never leave anything stock FML!

Bob,
If I had to recommend an LT250 it would be the 88 and up models. The 85 and 86 were not a very good engine design, you have to pull the cylinder to replace the reeds and they are a combination reed/piston port induction design. I just had one of them in the shop for a full engine overhaul and they are nothing short of a pain. The 87 and up will have the power valve setup, but the 87 model is hard to find parts for just like the 86 and older because they shared many parts that didn't get changed untill the 88 model. Repair parts are a concern on the 85-87 models.

Still running an FMF the bike came with. Stock +fmf the bike ran good. Had Brandon(WC) port it a few months a go to match an FTZ pipe I had ordered(never got the pipe, they cancelled my order do to no time to build it). Portwork + 38mm Airstryker carb runs damn good!!

Well I bought the 91, well my brother bought it for me. I think the guy likes to spend my money!

So it needs a clutch and a ball joint, and a clutch cable bracket. It has a Mikuni flat side carb on it now, not sure what size yet. It also needs to have the front fenders race cut, and the stock graphics blasted it off. (man are they UGLY!) From what I can find the FMF pipes are weak sauce on these things, and the Q pipe is the shizzy, but no longer made at the moment, or maybe ever. I guess Sheer was making them for Q, but only for Q.

I'm thinking of putting a CT pipe on it. I fount the FTZ, but I was wondering how long you had to wait for one.
